Chapter 7 - The Downward Spiral

A loud, pneumatic hiss filled the room, instantly drowning out Sophie’s crying.

Before I could process the sound, the wooden flooring beneath our feet gave a sickening lurch. The plush carpeted surface tilted sharply at a thirty-degree angle, like the deck of a sinking ship. Gravity instantly ripped my feet out from under me.

"Hold onto me, Sophie!" I screamed, wrapping my arms around my daughter’s small frame as we slid backward across the slick floorboards.

We slammed hard against the base of the shattered walk-in closet wall. The entire center section of the master bedroom floor was retracting into the basement crawlspace below, creating a yawning, dark chasm of exposed framing, insulation, and splintered timber.

Across the tilting room, Vanessa was clinging to the edge of the stationary doorway frame, her knuckles white, her amber eyes wide with a manic triumph.

"Enjoy the sub-level, Mark!" she shouted over the roaring hiss of the pneumatic pistons. "It's the exact same view Clara had for five years!"

"Daddy! Help!" Sophie sobbed, her fingers digging desperately into my jacket as the edge of our footing began to crumble beneath us. Dust and chunks of drywall rained down into the black abyss below.

I swept my flashlight beam down into the pit. Below us, illuminated in the flickering white beam, wasn't just a dirt crawlspace—it was a fully wired, concrete-lined subterranean bunker. And sprawled across the concrete floor directly beneath the opening was a tangle of old wiring, rusty tools, and... a heavy steel ladder bolted to the bunker wall.

It was our only way out.

"Sophie, look at me," I commanded, my voice cutting through the chaos with absolute authority. "Wrap your arms around my neck as tight as you can. Do not let go, no matter what happens. Understand?"

The little girl nodded fiercely, burying her face into my shoulder and locking her small arms around my throat with astonishing strength.

I braced my boots against a protruding wooden floor joist that was holding firm against the strain. Above us, Vanessa was reaching for the wall-mounted master control panel to seal the hatch entirely. If she closed those trapdoors, we would be buried alive in the dark forever.

I didn't wait. With a roar of exertion, I launched myself and my daughter off the collapsing floor ledge, diving headfirst into the dark, yawning void below.
