Chapter 9 - The Final Blueprint

"Move," I hissed, hooking my arm securely around Sophie’s waist and grabbing Clara by the collar of her tattered silk dress, hauling the skeletal woman up onto her feet.

"Leave me, Mark... save the girl," Clara gasped, her legs buckling under her weight.

"I'm not leaving anyone," I growled, half-carrying Clara as we stumbled down the narrow, industrial corridor away from the approaching footsteps.

The beam of light behind us swept closer, accompanied by the cold, melodic sound of Vanessa humming a nursery rhyme.

“Ring around the rosie, a pocket full of posies...” Vanessa’s voice echoed down the concrete hallway, bouncing off the reinforced walls with chilling acoustics. “Ashes, ashes, we all fall down...”

"Over here!" Clara wheezed, pointing a trembling finger toward a rusted, heavy iron hatch set into the side of the concrete foundation wall, half-concealed behind a stack of rotting wooden storage crates. "The maintenance drainage shaft... it leads out to the storm drain behind the property line."

I lunged forward, kicking aside the rotted crates with my boot. The iron hatch was secured by a heavy padlock, but the old locking mechanism was rusted completely through, caked in decades of damp lime scale.

I grabbed a heavy iron wrench from a nearby shelf, raised it above my head, and brought it down against the rusted padlock with all the strength I had left.

Clang!

Sparks flew into the dark air. The lock held.

Footsteps rounded the corner just behind us. The harsh beam of Vanessa’s flashlight slammed directly into my eyes, blinding me momentarily.

"End of the line, family," Vanessa’s voice purred from the shadows.

I squinted through the blinding glare. Vanessa stood at the end of the narrow corridor, blocking our only path back. In her right hand, she casually held a heavy, professional-grade nail gun connected to a portable pneumatic tank she had slung over her shoulder. The lethal steel nozzle was pointed directly at my chest.

"Put the wrench down, Mark," Vanessa instructed calmly, stepping forward with the cold, measured stride of an apex predator. "You've been a wonderful husband, truly. But some architectural designs simply require... structural modifications."

I didn't answer. With a surge of desperate adrenaline, I raised the heavy iron wrench and smashed it into the rusted padlock one final time.

Crack!

The lock shattered into three jagged pieces. The iron hatch swung outward, revealing a dark, damp tunnel leading up toward the faint sound of rushing water and distant street traffic.

"Sophie, hold on!" I shouted, shoving my daughter headfirst through the open hatch into the drainage tunnel just as Vanessa raised the nail gun and pulled the trigger.
