Chapter 13 - The Architect's End

"You're too late, Mark," Vanessa called out over the wailing electronic alarm. Her voice didn't carry panic; it carried the detached satisfaction of an artist admiring her final canvas. "The foundation pillars have been sheared. In less than sixty seconds, this entire house—and every secret buried beneath it—will sink into the sinkhole the builders covered up forty years ago."
"Drop the detonator, Vanessa," I demanded, coughing as the thick smoke choked my lungs. I crept slowly along the narrow ledge of the bedroom floor, keeping my balance inches above the yawning black void. "It's over. The police are outside. Clara told us everything. You're not Vanessa—you're Clara's sister, the identity thief who killed her own flesh and blood to steal a family!"
Vanessa flinched at that, her serene mask slipping for a fraction of a second. Her amber eyes flashed with a sudden, venomous fury.
"Clara was a weak coward!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking into a manic shriek. "She wanted to throw away our family name, our inheritance, our entire future! I gave her a better life! I gave you a better wife! I built this family from the ground up, brick by brick, lie by lie!"
"A life built on murder isn't a life, Vanessa. It's a cage," I said, stopping just five feet away from her. I could feel the intense heat radiating from the exposed electrical lines dangling in the abyss below.
"Then we'll all burn in the cage together," she whispered softly.
She pressed her thumb down hard against the red button on the detonator.

I didn't think. I lunged forward across the narrow ledge, tackling her hard around the waist just as a deafening explosion echoed from the basement below.
We collided violently, sliding across the slick, tilting floorboards. The detonator flew out of her hand, tumbling off the edge into the dark chasm where it vanished with a faint metallic clatter. But the damage was already done. The floor beneath us groaned, fractured, and violently gave way.
