Chapter 16 - The Aftermath

Three weeks had passed since the night the house burned to the ground, turning our custom suburban dream into a charred, smoking crater of rubble and investigation tape.
The story had dominated national headlines for days: The Architect of Deception: How a Cold-Blooded Imposter Replaced a Family and Built a House of Horrors. Talk shows dissected the blueprint leaks, the secret subterranean corridors, and the harrowing rescue of little Sophie and her long-lost aunt.
Right now, though, none of that mattered.
We were sitting on the sunlit porch of a small, rented coastal cottage three hundred miles away from the ruins. The air here smelled of salt water and pine trees instead of smoke and old drywall.
Sophie was sitting on the wooden deck boards, laughing brightly as she chased a golden retriever puppy across the lawn—a dog we had adopted just last week. Her laugh was light, untroubled, and completely free of the shadows that had haunted her eyes for months.
Inside the kitchen, Clara was unpacking groceries. She had spent the last two weeks in the hospital recovering her strength, and though she was still thin, color had finally returned to her cheeks. She was helping us pick up the pieces, serving as a bridge between the life Sophie had lost and the new reality we were building together.
I sat on the porch swing, sipping a cup of coffee and flipping through a notebook of simple, honest architectural sketches—designs for a small, single-story cabin with large windows, an open floor plan, and absolutely no hidden rooms, no dead zones, and no secrets.
My phone buzzed on the small wooden table beside me. It was an email notification from the local police department regarding the final closure of the estate case.

I opened it, glancing over the official summary. The forensic teams had finished clearing the sub-level debris. Among the charred rubble, they had recovered a locked metal safety deposit box belonging to the imposter. Inside were old photographs, forged birth certificates, and a handwritten journal detailing her meticulous plans for dozens of other families she had targeted across the country.
We had stopped her just in time.
