Chapter 3 - The Twin Illusion

The word echoed in the silent bedroom, hanging like a physical weight in the dust-choked air. Sister.

Vanessa staggered backward, colliding hard against the dresser and sending a ceramic lamp crashing to the floor. "You're dead," she choked out, her hands trembling as she pointed a shaking finger at the emaciated apparition. "I put you down there. I signed the papers. You were supposed to rot!"

"And yet, here I am," the woman rasped, coughing up a spray of dark dust as she struggled into a sitting position. She dragged herself forward a few inches, leaving a trail of gray residue on our clean carpet. "You thought stealing my life, my husband, and my house would be that easy, didn't you, Clara?"

Clara?

My head snapped toward Vanessa. For five years, the woman standing across from me had been Vanessa—my loving wife, the gentle mother of my child, an architect who ran her own boutique design firm. But the name hit me like a physical blow.

"Vanessa," I said, my voice trembling as I pried Sophie’s face away from my chest so she wouldn't see the raw madness in her mother's eyes. "What is she talking about? Who is Clara?"

Vanessa’s chest heaved rapidly, her facade of calm completely shattered. The polished, sophisticated woman I thought I knew was gone, replaced by a cornered animal baring its teeth. Her eyes darted from the stranger on the floor to the SD card still clutched in Sophie's tiny fist.

"She’s insane, Mark!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking into a hysterical pitch. "She’s a lunatic stalker who broke into our foundation years ago and went feral! Don't listen to a single word she says!"

"A stalker who lived behind your custom-built closet wall?" I fired back, my voice rising in cold fury. "A stalker who shares your exact face, your exact voice?"

The woman on the floor let out a raspy, hacking laugh that turned into a wet cough. She raised a skeletal arm, pointing a long, dirt-caked finger directly at the nightstand where my laptop sat plugged into its charger.

"She didn't lock me in there because I'm a stalker, Mark," the woman whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling, conspiratorial register. "She locked me in there because I found out what happened to the real Vanessa. The woman whose skin my dear sister is currently wearing."
