Chapter 10 - The Shocking Legacy and a New Dawn

Three months later.
The news outlets were still recovering from the biggest corporate scandal in modern American history. Whitmore Industries had undergone a complete restructuring. Margaret Whitmore was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison without parole after pleading guilty to multiple counts of extortion and financial fraud.
In a shocking plot twist that stunned the financial world, historical auditing revealed that Whitmore Industries had actually been founded on a stolen patent created by Claire’s late father, Richard Sterling, thirty years ago. Margaret Whitmore had manipulated the original contracts to steal the company from him.
By court order, 51% controlling interest of the newly rebranded Sterling-Whitmore Global was officially restored to Claire Sterling. The poor woman Margaret had tried to erase was now the majority owner of the very empire that had tried to destroy her.
On a warm afternoon in late October, I stood on the back porch of a beautiful white house overlooking Lake Michigan. It wasn't a cold billionaire's mansion; it was a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the sounds of children playing.
Out on the green lawn, Leo, Sam, and Julian were running around with a football, laughing loudly as Marcus taught them how to throw a spiral.
A pair of soft hands wrapped around my waist from behind. Claire leaned her head against my back, resting her chin against my shoulder.
"They're getting better at football," she said softly.
I turned around, wrapping my arms around her waist, looking into the eyes of the woman I had spent nine years losing—and finally finding again.
"I spoke to the board today," I said, smiling down at her. "The new scholarship fund in your father's name was officially approved. $100 million for kids from working-class families."
Claire smiled, tears shimmering in her eyes—not tears of sadness, but of peace. "My dad would have loved that."
"Claire..." I took a deep breath, reaching into my pocket and pulling out a small velvet box. I opened it to reveal a simple, delicate gold ring—no massive diamond, no flashy billionaire display, just a pure, timeless ring. "Nine years ago, I didn't give you a wedding, a diamond, or a proper promise. I gave you my mother's cruelty instead. I know I can't undo nine years of pain... but I want to give you every single day of the rest of my life."
Claire looked from the ring up to my eyes, her lips trembling.
"Will you marry me, Claire? For real this time. No hidden agendas. No corporate empires. Just us."
Before she could answer, three pairs of muddy sneakers came thundering up the wooden stairs of the porch.

"Mom! Dad!" Leo shouted, breathless, holding the football under his arm. "Sam dropped the ball in the lake! You have to come help us!"
Claire looked at the boys, then looked back at me, a brilliant, breathtaking smile lighting up her entire face.
