Chapter 9 - The Showdown at the Mansion

Two hours later, three black luxury sedans pulled up the winding driveway of the Whitmore Estate in Lake Forest.

The heavy iron doors were locked, but I didn't care. Marcus and two security officers used a mechanical ram to smash through the lock, shattering the heavy double doors into the grand foyer.

Inside, my mother was standing near the grand staircase, her hands shaking as she held a glass of brandy. Beside her were two private security guards she had hired, along with the three boys—Leo, Sam, and Julian—who were huddled together near the foot of the stairs, looking terrified.

"You can't do this!" Margaret screamed, her polished composure completely gone. "This is private property! I am their legal guardian!"

"Not anymore, Margaret," a voice called out from behind me.

Claire walked through the shattered doors. She wasn't wearing her catering uniform anymore. She was dressed in an elegant tailored black suit, her head held high, her eyes fixed on the woman who had terrorized her life for a decade.

Beside her walked two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission and four officers from the Chicago Police Department.

"Margaret Whitmore," the lead federal agent announced, pulling a red folder from his coat. "You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and witness extortion."

"Mommy!" Leo, Sam, and Julian cried out simultaneously, breaking away from Margaret’s guards and sprinting across the marble floor into Claire’s open arms. Claire fell to her knees, crying hysterically as she pulled all three of her sons tightly against her chest.

"This is a mistake!" Margaret shouted as the police officers stepped forward and grabbed her arms, pulling her hands behind her back. "Do you know who I am?! I am Margaret Whitmore! You can't put handcuffs on me!"

"You're not a CEO anymore, Margaret," I said softly, stepping between her and my children. "And you're not a grandmother. You're just a criminal."

As the officers snapped the cold metal handcuffs onto her wrists, Margaret looked at me with pure venom. "You destroyed our family for her!" she spat, tears of rage smearing her makeup. "You gave away everything I built for you!"

"You didn't build a family, Margaret," I replied, my voice steady and cold. "You built a empire of lies. And it ends today."
