Chapter 4 - The Venomous Matriarch

At midnight, I drove my car through the heavy iron gates of the Whitmore Estate in Lake Forest. I didn't knock. I kicked the massive oak front doors open, the sound echoing through the grand marble foyer of the house I grew up in.

"Ethan?"

My mother emerged from the drawing room, wearing an elegant silk dressing gown, holding a crystal glass of scotch. At sixty-five, Margaret Whitmore was still an intimidating force—sharp features, icy blue eyes, and an unyielding posture that had crushed dozens of corporate rivals.

"You're making quite a scene," she said smoothly, taking a slow sip of her drink. "I assume the charity gala was a success?"

"Where are they, Margaret?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm as I walked toward her.

She didn't even flinch. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Leo. Sam. Julian," I said, slamming my fist into the mahogany wall beside her head. The wooden panel cracked. "My sons. My three sons that you hid from me for eight years!"

For a fraction of a second, a flicker of surprise crossed her cold face, but it was instantly replaced by a smirk of mild amusement. She walked over to her desk and set her glass down.

"So, you finally met them," Margaret said, her tone as casual as if she were discussing the weather. "I was wondering when Claire’s poverty would force her into working one of my charity events."

"You monstrous evil woman," I breathed, tears of sheer rage stinging my eyes. "You ruined my marriage! You forced her away! And then you went behind my back and funded their lives? You let them grow up thinking I abandoned them!"

"I did what was necessary to preserve this family!" Margaret snapped, her calm demeanor suddenly shattering into visceral venom. "You were weak, Ethan! You were ready to throw away a multi-billion-dollar empire, a lineage of four generations, for a dirt-poor waitress’s daughter! If I had let you stay with her, you would have spent your twenties living in a suburban shack, playing house!"

"They are my children!" I roared.

"And they are my heirs!" Margaret fired back, stepping right into my face. "I saved those boys from her poverty. I paid for their tutors, their elite schools, their doctors. I made sure they carried Whitmore blood with Whitmore discipline! Claire was an unfit vessel, Ethan. I took what was rightfully ours and left the rest."

"You're insane," I whispered in horror. "I'm taking them. I'm taking my family back, and I am cutting you out of my life forever."

Margaret chuckled—a dry, sinister sound that sent chills down my spine. "You can try, Ethan. But if you take one step toward Claire, I will release the real documents."

I paused. "What documents?"

Margaret smiled, pulling a velvet key from her desk drawer. "You really think Claire left just because I threatened her father? Ask her about the night her father died, Ethan. Ask her who owned the truck that ran his car off the road nine years ago."
