Chapter 22 - The Midnight Raid

At 2:00 AM, the blizzard howling outside our Vermont home turned into a tactical battleground.

The security perimeter sensors around the farm went dark simultaneously. Inside the main house, I woke to the soft hum of the backup generators cutting off, plunging the master bedroom into pitch blackness. Before I could reach for my nightstand, the heavy glass windows of the living room shattered below.

"Ethan!" Claire gasped, her eyes wide with terror in the dark.

"Stay behind me," I whispered, pulling a concealed firearm from the hidden wall safe beside our wardrobe. "Marcus! Do you read me?"

Static cracked through my earpiece. "Boss! We’ve got at least eight heavily armed mercenaries breaching the east gate! They cut the main power lines!"

I grabbed Claire’s hand, sprinting down the hallway toward the boys' bedroom. "Leo! Sam! Julian! Get into the storm shelter now!"

The three boys, now eleven years old, reacted with incredible discipline. Leo pulled open the hidden door behind the bookshelf, pushing his brothers inside. But as Claire reached to pull Sam into the bunker, a flashbang grenade detonated in the hallway, blinding us with deafening light and smoke.

Four masked operatives dressed in black tactical gear burst into the room. One of them leveled a suppressed rifle at my chest, while another grabbed Sam by his tactical collar, pulling the boy away from Claire’s grip.

"Sam!" Claire shrieked, throwing herself recklessly at the operative. The man backhanded her across the face, sending her crashing against the hardwood floor.

Rage blinded me. I ducked beneath the lead operative's barrel, driving my weight into his knee until the joint snapped, kicking his weapon free and firing three shots into his chest plate. Marcus erupted into the room from the balcony, neutralizing two more attackers with suppressed fire.

The remaining mercenary grabbed Sam, dragging him toward the broken window.

"Don't touch my brother!" Leo screamed from the bunker doorway. With frightening precision, Leo threw a heavy iron desk lamp directly into the mercenary's face, disorienting him just long enough for Sam to twist out of his grip and bite the man's arm.

Marcus tackled the operative through the window, sending both men crashing onto the snow-covered lawn below.

We held the house, but as I pulled Claire into my arms, wiped the blood from her lip, and gathered our trembling sons, I realized a terrifying detail. The lead mercenary's comm-link was lying on the floor, still broadcasting an encrypted voice from an overhead helicopter:

"Subject Sam Sterling secured? Negative? Target's pendant contains the biometric encryption key. Eliminate the parents and retake the child."
