Chapter 7 - The Masterstroke of Evil

The front door burst open without a warrant. Three police officers stepped inside, accompanied by a sharp-looking woman in a navy suit holding a stack of legal documents, flanked by my mother’s head corporate attorney, Arthur Vance.

"Claire Sterling?" the woman said coldly. "I'm representative Davis from Cook County Child Protective Services. We have received an emergency petition citing unsafe living conditions, severe financial neglect, and psychological endangerment of minors Leo, Sam, and Julian Sterling."

"What?!" Claire shrieked, sprinting forward to block the hallway leading to the boys. "This is insane! I take care of my children! I have two jobs!"

"Which leaves them unattended for fourteen hours a day," Vance stepped forward, adjusting his gold cufflinks with a sickening smile. "Furthermore, Mrs. Sterling, bank records show you have been accepting unauthorized, untaxed third-party funds under fraudulent pretenses. The court has granted temporary emergency custody of the children to their legal grandmother, Margaret Whitmore, pending a full psychological evaluation of the mother."

"No!" Claire screamed, hysterically falling to her knees. "No! You can't take my babies! Ethan, do something! Please! Don't let her take them!"

"Touch those kids and I will kill you where you stand," I growled, stepping in front of the police officers, my physical presence blocking the narrow hallway.

"Stand down, Mr. Whitmore," the lead officer said, pulling his taser from his belt. "This is a court-ordered emergency custody warrant signed by Judge Harrison."

Judge Harrison. My mother’s personal puppet on the county circuit court. She had orchestrated this entire legal ambush in less than two hours.

"Ethan, don't!" Claire wept, grabbing my waist. "If you fight the police, they’ll put you in jail, and there will be no one left to fight her!"

"Mommy! Mommy!" the three boys began crying frantically from the hallway, terrorized by the police officers pushing into the house.

"Vance," I said, leaning into the attorney's face, my voice deadly low. "Tell my mother she has won tonight's battle. But tell her that by sunrise tomorrow, I am going to tear her world down to the ash."

Vance didn't flinch. "Your mother expected you to say that, Ethan. She also told me to remind you that 60% of Whitmore Industries stock is controlled by her private trust. If you oppose her in court, she will destroy you financially, strip your CEO title by morning, and ensure Claire Sterling spends the next ten years in federal prison for fraud."

I looked down at Claire, who was sobbing uncontrollably on the floor, holding her boys close as the officers moved in to separate them.

"I don't give a damn about the money," I said. "Take them tonight, Vance. Because tomorrow, the real war begins."
