Chapter 15 - The Secret Vault

Victor underestimated one crucial detail: Claire was a survivor. Unknown to Victor or the media, Marcus had anticipated foul play at the hospital and secretly transferred Claire to a private, off-grid medical facility disguised as an elite rehab center. Two days later, Claire opened her eyes. Though physically weak, her mind was sharper than ever. She knew I could never poison her. Working through Marcus, Claire orchestrated a covert visit to my jail cell disguised as a legal assistant. When I saw her alive behind the visitor glass, tears spilled down my face. "I know it wasn't you, Ethan," she whispered, pressing her hand against the glass. "We don't have much time. What did your father leave behind?" I remembered a detail buried deep in my childhood memories—a brass key my father had given me on his deathbed, telling me to use it only when the house fell into total darkness. "In the family estate in Lake Forest," I told her, "under the floorboards of the old wine cellar. Box 1984." That night, Marcus and Claire broke into the locked Whitmore Mansion, bypassing Victor’s guards, and extracted a rusted steel box. Inside was a hidden adoption decree and a DNA test from thirty years ago. The document revealed a secret that shattered the entire Whitmore narrative: I was not Margaret Whitmore’s biological son.
