Chapter 17 - The Trap at the Gala

Victor held a massive celebration gala at the Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel—the exact venue where he planned to announce the complete liquidation of Sterling-Whitmore Global and his official appointment as guardian to my sons. The ballroom was packed with Chicago's elite, politicians, and media executives. Victor stood at the podium in a tailored tuxedo, raising a glass of crystal champagne. "To a new era of Whitmore dominance," he announced, smiling for the flashing cameras. "And to the recovery of my dear nephews, who will now be raised under proper discipline." "I wouldn't start drinking just yet, Victor," a voice thundered from the main entrance. The heavy doors swung open. I walked into the ballroom wearing a sleek black suit, flanked by two federal prosecutors. Beside me walked Claire, radiant, powerful, and completely healed, holding the original, certified court documents in her hand. The room erupted into absolute pandemonium. Cameras flashed frantically as Victor’s smile vanished, his face draining of all color.
