Chapter 18 - The Pages of the Past

I sat alone in the quiet office for a long time after Ethan left. The sun dipped lower, casting long amber rays across the desk. Finally, I reached out and pulled the worn leather journal toward me.

I flipped open the heavy, yellowed pages, scanning the dense cursive handwriting of a man who had built an empire on blood and cold calculation. Page after page detailed corporate ruthlessless, social manipulation, and the cold isolation of old-money elitism.

Finally, I turned to the very last page, marked with a heavy paperclip.

Ethan had highlighted a single paragraph written by his grandfather in the final months of his life:

"We spent our entire lives building walls of gold to keep the world out, believing that blood was the only currency that mattered. But in the end, walls built to exclude others only serve to imprison those inside them. True strength is not inherited through a name; it is forged by those who have the courage to survive the fire and build something real from the ashes."

I closed the journal slowly, resting my hand on the worn leather cover.

For five years, I had carried the anger, the betrayal, and the burning need for revenge as my primary fuel. But reading those words, sitting in the heart of an empire I had built with my own hands, the anger finally dissolved into a profound, liberating peace.

I hadn't just beaten the Montgomerys at their own game. I had outgrown them entirely.
