I looked up from the documents, meeting Clara’s steady, inquiring gaze. "Why bring this to me, Clara? You could have broken this story across every major political network in Washington. It would have destroyed whatever is left of the Hastings name."
"My family traded their integrity for proximity to power," Clara said, her voice firm and resolute. "I spent the last two years digging through public records, political cover-ups, and suppressed court files trying to figure out why my sister’s wedding became the biggest scandal of the century. I realized the media got it all wrong. It wasn't a scandal about a broken engagement. It was a reckoning."
She stood up, gathering her bag. "I’m publishing a book on generational wealth and systemic displacement in the Midwest. I wanted to verify the documents with you before I print the final chapter. I wanted the truth told correctly—not as a tabloid drama, but as a record of survival."
I rose from my chair, walked around the desk, and extended my hand. Clara looked surprised for a fraction of a second before taking it with a firm, confident grip.
