Chapter 38 - A Quiet Evening

The winter snow began to fall over Chicago, dusting the towering skyscrapers and freezing the edge of Lake Michigan in delicate patterns of ice.

Inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was warm and filled with laughter. A crackling fire burned in the marble hearth while Liam, Noah, and Caleb debated over a board game at the sprawling dining table, teasing each other with the effortless camaraderie of brothers who had weathered every storm together.

I walked out onto the private balcony, wrapped in a heavy cashmere coat, breathing in the crisp winter air. The city lights twinkled below like a million fallen stars.

Ten years ago, I walked into a wedding designed to break me, pushing a stroller and holding an invitation meant to humiliate me. They thought I would arrive in tears, tucked away in the back row by the kitchen entrance.

Instead, I arrived like a storm.

Footsteps crunched softly on the snowy balcony tiles behind me. I turned to see Caleb standing there, holding two mugs of hot spiced cider, handing one to me with a warm smile.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mama?" he asked, leaning against the stone railing beside me.

May you like

I took the mug, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic, looking out over the endless expanse of the city we had conquered.

"I was just thinking," I smiled, pulling my coat tighter against the winter wind, "that no matter how cold the world gets, as long as we stand together, nothing can ever tear us down."
