Chapter 5 - The Corporate Strike

Three days later, the front-page headline of the Chicago Tribune financial section read: MONTGOMERY EMPIRE IN FREEFALL: THE MILLIONAIRE EX-WIFE STRIKES BACK.
I sat in my corner office on the 45th floor of downtown Chicago, watching the sun glint off Lake Michigan. My digital marketing empire, Apex Media, was humming with quiet efficiency. Across my desk sat a thick dossier detailing the complete financial collapse of Montgomery Logistics.
My chief financial officer, Marcus, slid a tablet across my desk. "Maya, the stock dropped another eighteen percent this morning. Eleanor tried to secure an emergency liquidity loan from three major banks, but our legal team flagged the pending lineage injunction. Every bank locked their vaults."
"And Ethan?" I asked, sipping my black coffee.
"He's been locked out of corporate headquarters," Marcus grinned. "Eleanor stripped him of his executive title yesterday, trying to appease the board. But the board isn't having it. They're calling an emergency vote for Friday to remove Eleanor as chairwoman entirely."
A soft knock sounded at the office door. My assistant poked her head in, looking slightly pale. "Maya... you have a visitor. Downstairs in the lobby. He refuses to leave."
"Who is it?"
"Ethan Montgomery. And... he looks broken."

I gazed out the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the tiny yellow cabs crawling through the Chicago traffic far below. For five years, I had dreamed of this exact moment. Not just for revenge, but for survival. I had built an empire from the ashes of the life they tried to burn down.
"Send him up," I said quietly. "Let's see what a Montgomery looks like when he has nothing left."
