Chapter 13 - A Knock at the Gate

Peace, however, rarely comes without a final test.

It was a quiet Sunday evening at the Anderson estate. The crickets chirped softly in the sprawling gardens, and the scent of blooming jasmine drifted through the open windows of the grand library where Betty and Jack were reviewing old photo albums.

Suddenly, the intercom at the front security gates buzzed sharply.

Jack frowned, tapping the console. “Speak.”

“Mr. Anderson,” the security chief’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding hesitant. “You have a visitor at the main gate. A woman claiming to be... well, she says she’s your estranged cousin, Eleanor’s sister, Clara.”

Betty froze. The photo album slipped slightly from her lap.

Jack’s dark eyes narrowed. “Clara? She hasn't lived in the country for thirty years.”

“She insists on speaking with you immediately, sir. She says she has information regarding the remaining offshore accounts that the federal audit missed.”

Jack exchanged a brief, steady look with Betty.

“Let her in,” Jack commanded quietly. “Bring her straight to the conservatory.”
