Chapter 4 - The Betrayal at the Foundation

While Jack sat by Betty’s hospital bed, miles away at the Anderson Foundation headquarters, a very different conversation was taking place in the dark.

Arthur Pendelton, the senior executive vice president and legacy board member who had managed the Anderson family trust for three decades, stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of his corner office. Behind him, a younger corporate lawyer named Victor Vance nervously tapped a folder against his thigh.

“Did you see the live streams from the gala tonight?” Victor asked, his voice shaking. “The whole internet is talking about Jack Anderson adopting two little girls and paying off a random woman’s medical debt. People are digging into the background of that family.”

Arthur didn't turn around. His face was carved from stone.

“Let them dig,” Arthur sneered coldly. “Jack is distracted by sentimentality. He thinks he’s playing the hero. But he doesn't know what we buried in the foundation vaults.”

“If the audit catches wind of the missing fifty million from the regional health grants—”

“The audit won't catch anything,” Arthur interrupted, turning around with a predatory smile. “Not if we restructure the foundation assets before sunrise. Jack is at the hospital. He’s vulnerable. We strike tonight, strip his voting shares under the ‘emergency financial instability’ clause, and by tomorrow morning, the Anderson Foundation—and everything Jack owns—will be under our control.”

Victor swallowed hard, nodding slowly. “And the girls?”

Arthur’s smile turned razor-sharp. “Let them keep their cookies. By tomorrow, they won't even have a roof over their heads.”
