Chapter 15 - Betty’s Ultimatum

Clara spun around, her eyes widening in genuine shock as Betty stepped out from the shadows of the arched doorway, leaning slightly on her cane.
“Betty Rivera?” Clara gasped, her face draining of color. “You... you’re supposed to be dead, or living in some nursing home!”
“I am very much alive, Clara,” Betty said steadily, walking right up to the desk. Her dark eyes burned with an authority that commanded the entire room. “And I know every single lie your sister Eleanor told, and every shell company your family set up to bleed this estate dry.”
Clara forced a nervous, brittle laugh. “A domestic servant thinks she can lecture me on family business—?”
“I am not a servant here, Clara. I am the co-trustee of this estate,” Betty interrupted, her voice ringing clear and absolute. She reached down, picked up Clara’s leather folder, and tossed it straight into the roaring stone fireplace beside them.
Flames instantly caught the dry parchment and old paper inside, crackling loudly as they consumed the blackmail material.
“No!” Clara shrieked, lunging forward, but the heavy glass doors opened instantly as two security guards stepped into the room, blocking her path.
Jack stood up, towering over his aunt with a gaze so lethal it silenced her instantly.

“You have five minutes to get back into your car, Clara,” Jack said, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper. “If you ever set foot on this property again, I won't just let the IRS audit you—I will personally ensure you spend your retirement sharing a cell block with Arthur.”
Clara glared at them both with pure, unadulterated venom, turned on her heel, and stormed out of the conservatory into the night.
