Chapter 16 - The Cleansed Slate

As the sound of Clara’s town car tires fading down the gravel driveway died away, the tension in the conservatory evaporated.

Betty let out a long, shaky breath, leaning her weight against the back of a velvet armchair.

Jack rushed forward, placing a steady hand on her arm. “Are you alright, Betty?”

“I’m fine, Jackie,” she smiled weakly, patting his hand. “Just tired of ghosts. It’s time we let the past stay in the past.”

“The files she brought were worthless anyway,” Jack noted calmly, walking over to the fireplace where the ashes were settling. “Maris had already flagged those Swiss accounts three months ago. Clara walked into a trap of her own making.”

Betty looked up at him, her eyes softening with profound pride.

“You’ve grown into a remarkable man, Jack,” she whispered. “Your grandfather would be so proud of the house you’ve built.”

“I didn't build it alone,” Jack replied softly, looking out toward the hallway where the faint sounds of Amy and Lisa laughing upstairs could be heard. “We built it together.”
