CHAPTER 1 — The Bride Beneath the Bed

The dust beneath the bridal suite bed smelled like old wood and expensive perfume.

It wasn't exactly how I had imagined spending the first hour of my marriage.

My name is Emma Carter.

Thirty years old.

Newly married.

And completely unaware that my entire life was about to split into two halves.

The woman I had been before I crawled under that bed...

...and the woman who crawled back out.

Only an hour earlier, my husband Ethan had kissed my forehead while everyone applauded.

"I promise," he whispered.

"No secrets between us."

Now I understood what he really meant.

Only my secrets mattered.

Not his.

The hotel suite overlooked downtown Chicago.

Champagne glasses still sat on the table.

Rose petals covered the king-sized bed.

Our wedding gifts filled every corner of the room.

Everything looked like the beginning of a perfect marriage.

Instead, it became the crime scene where I watched my future die.

The suite door opened.

High heels.

Vanessa.

My brand-new mother-in-law.

She laughed while placing her purse onto the bed.

"I'm telling you, Monica," she said through speakerphone.

"That girl has absolutely no idea."

Another woman laughed.

"Poor Emma."

Poor Emma.

Funny.

If they had known my family's name, they wouldn't even dare say it aloud.

But I stayed silent.

Every word became another piece of evidence.

Then came the sentence that made my blood freeze.

"Ethan should be here soon," Vanessa said.

"The pregnant one is waiting downstairs."

Pregnant?

My heart skipped.

The woman on the phone giggled.

"Claire is nervous."

Claire.

The blonde marketing manager Ethan always described as "just another coworker."

The same woman who hugged him a little too long during our engagement party.

The same woman who accidentally called him late every Friday night.

I remembered every excuse.

Every lie.

Every warning my friends had given me.

I had defended him.

I had defended all of them.

Ten minutes later...

The suite door opened again.

This time...

Ethan walked inside.

But he wasn't alone.

Claire entered behind him.

She rested one hand over her stomach.

It wasn't noticeable beneath the elegant green dress.

Unless...

You already knew.

Vanessa smiled.

"My future grandson."

Ethan bent down and kissed Claire.

Not on the lips.

On her forehead.

The same place he had kissed me at the altar.

"I'll divorce Emma within six months," he said calmly.

"We'll keep the apartment."

Claire smiled.

"And then?"

Ethan shrugged.

"We get married."

My entire body went numb.

Vanessa poured champagne into three glasses.

"To family."

They raised their glasses.

No one noticed the bride lying beneath the bed.

Listening.

Recording.

Remembering.

Then Ethan pulled a folder from his briefcase.

"I've already prepared everything."

He spread several documents across the bed.

Property transfers.

Financial statements.

Medical evaluations.

Fake counseling appointments.

Pages describing emotional instability.

My name appeared on every sheet.

They were planning to destroy me before I even realized the marriage had begun.

Claire laughed.

"She really believes you love her."

"I did," Ethan answered.

"For about three months."

The room exploded with laughter.

Except beneath the bed.

Where I quietly pressed Record on my phone.

Forty-three minutes.

That conversation lasted forty-three minutes.

Forty-three minutes of confessions.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Forgery.

Blackmail.

Property theft.

Even discussions about drugging my wine if I became "difficult."

By the time they left the suite...

I had enough evidence to ruin every one of them.

But revenge...

Works best when served patiently.

I climbed out from beneath the bed.

Straightened my wedding dress.

Looked at myself in the mirror.

And smiled.

They thought tonight had ended with their victory.

It hadn't even begun.

Because there was one secret none of them knew.

Tomorrow morning...

My father would be arriving from New York.

And Ethan had already invited him to brunch...

May you like

Without realizing exactly who he was.
