CHAPTER 8 — The Man Behind Vanessa

Federal agents moved Ethan into protective custody before sunrise.
Someone had already tried to silence him once.
His prison meal had tested positive for a dangerous sedative.
Fortunately, another inmate noticed something strange before Ethan finished eating.
Now everyone understood.
Someone wanted him dead.
Dead men couldn't testify.
Inside a secure interview room, Ethan looked broken.
He had lost weight.
Dark circles surrounded his eyes.
"I'll tell you everything," he whispered.
"But you have to protect me."
The lead investigator nodded.
"Start from the beginning."
Ethan took a deep breath.
"My mother never worked alone."
He slid an old photograph across the table.
It showed Vanessa standing beside an elderly man wearing an expensive gray suit.
I had never seen him before.
Richard Carter had.
The color drained from my father's face.
"No..."
Sarah frowned.
"You know him?"
My father answered slowly.
"Harold Whitmore."
Harold Whitmore.
One of Chicago's most respected real estate attorneys.
A philanthropist.
Board member.
Political donor.
Television commentator.
A man whose reputation was spotless.
According to Ethan...
It was all a lie.
For more than twenty years, Harold had secretly identified wealthy women living alone.
Vanessa built emotional profiles.
Ethan approached the targets.
Corrupt lawyers handled forged paperwork.
Private investigators spread false rumors.
Doctors were bribed to sign questionable evaluations.
By the time victims realized what happened...
Their money had already disappeared.
"Why help Vanessa?" I asked.
Ethan looked down.
"Because Harold loved her."
Silence.
"He promised to make her rich."
"He promised revenge."
"He promised no one would ever humiliate her again."
Federal agents immediately searched Harold's downtown office.
Hidden behind a bookshelf...
They discovered an underground archive.
Thousands of files.
Photographs.
Passports.
Forged identities.
Bank accounts in multiple countries.
Enough evidence to expose one of the largest marriage-fraud operations Illinois had ever seen.
But Harold...
Was gone.
His private jet had left Chicago less than two hours earlier.
An international warrant was issued immediately.
Late that night, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Against my better judgment...
I answered.
A calm elderly voice spoke.
"Emma Carter."
"You've inherited your mother's courage."
My heart stopped.
"Harold."
"You've been looking for me."
"I've been watching you."
"If you want the truth about your mother's death..."
"...come alone."
The call disconnected.
Sarah immediately shouted,
"Don't go!"
But deep inside...
I already knew.
May you like
I couldn't ignore the man who claimed to know how my mother really died.
