CHAPTER 7 — My Mother's Hidden File

For fifteen years, I believed my mother's death had been nothing more than a tragic car accident.
That was what every police report said.
That was what every newspaper printed.
That was what my father repeated whenever I asked.
"It was an accident, Emma."
Eventually, I stopped asking.
Now Ethan's final sentence echoed through my mind.
"My mother wanted your mother first."
I couldn't sleep.
At three in the morning, I drove to my father's estate.
The lights in his study were still on.
He was waiting.
Almost as if he knew I would come.
Without saying a word, I placed Ethan's statement on his desk.
My father read it once.
Then slowly removed his glasses.
For the first time in my life...
I saw fear in Richard Carter's eyes.
Not business pressure.
Not financial risk.
Real fear.
"There are things," he said quietly, "I've tried to protect you from."
I felt my heart racing.
"Did you know Vanessa before I met Ethan?"
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
He walked toward a large painting hanging above the fireplace.
Behind it was an old steel safe.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Most were labeled with dates.
One folder simply read:
VANESSA LAWSON
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Photographs.
Court documents.
Newspaper clippings.
Private investigator reports.
And one picture that stopped my breathing.
My mother...
Standing beside a much younger Vanessa.
Both smiling.
Both wearing business suits.
"What is this?"
My father closed his eyes.
"Before Vanessa became Ethan's mother..."
"...she worked for our company."
Years earlier, Vanessa had been one of Apex Development's rising executives.
Brilliant.
Charismatic.
Ambitious.
My mother had considered her a close friend.
Until millions of dollars disappeared.
An internal investigation uncovered forged contracts and hidden bank accounts.
Vanessa denied everything.
She claimed my mother framed her.
She lost her career.
Her reputation.
Everything.
The evidence had been overwhelming.
But there had never been enough proof for criminal charges.
Vanessa disappeared.
No one heard from her again.
Until she returned...
As my future mother-in-law.
Tears filled my eyes.
"So she targeted me..."
My father nodded slowly.
"It wasn't about your apartment."
"It wasn't even about money."
"It was revenge."
She believed destroying me would finally destroy my mother.
Even though my mother had been gone for fifteen years.
Hatred had survived longer than grief.
Just as we finished reading the file, Sarah called.
"Emma."
Her voice sounded urgent.
"You need to come to the courthouse immediately."
"What happened?"
"Ethan has agreed to testify."
"Against Vanessa."
"But that's not the shocking part."
"He says someone else financed the entire operation."
"Someone we've never heard of."
The nightmare wasn't over.
May you like
It had only reached its next chapter.
