CHAPTER 10 — The Last Person I Ever Suspected

The words haunted me for days.

"Don't trust..."

Harold Whitmore never finished the sentence.

Two gunshots had silenced him forever.

The only witness who could fully explain my mother's death was gone.

But he had left me something far more dangerous.

The videotape.

The FBI immediately transferred the tape to its forensic laboratory.

Every second was carefully restored from the damaged recording.

Richard, Sarah, the lead prosecutor, and I sat inside a secure viewing room as the screen flickered to life.

The timestamp read:

September 18... Fifteen Years Earlier.

There was my mother.

Grace Carter.

Elegant as always.

She stepped out of her black sedan outside an underground parking garage.

Seconds later...

Vanessa appeared.

Younger.

Calmer.

Almost friendly.

The two women embraced.

No shouting.

No anger.

Nothing like Harold had described.

Then another figure entered the camera frame.

A man wearing a dark baseball cap.

His face remained hidden.

He handed Vanessa a small toolbox.

She opened it.

Inside...

A cordless impact wrench.

My father leaned forward.

"What is she doing?"

The next sixty seconds answered everything.

The camera showed Vanessa kneeling beside my mother's vehicle.

She removed the front wheel.

Then reached toward the brake assembly.

Sarah covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

Vanessa deliberately loosened the brake line.

She wiped away fingerprints.

Closed the hood.

Then calmly walked away.

There was no accident.

There had never been an accident.

It had been murder.

Silence filled the room.

I couldn't breathe.

For fifteen years...

I had placed flowers at a grave believing fate had stolen my mother.

Instead...

Someone had planned every detail.

Richard lowered his head.

When he looked back up, tears filled his eyes.

"I failed her."

"No," I whispered.

"They fooled all of us."

Then the forensic analyst paused the video.

"Wait."

He zoomed into the reflection on a nearby parked car.

Barely visible...

Someone else had been watching.

Only half a face appeared in the reflection.

Enough for facial-recognition software.

Within minutes, the computer produced a match.

Everyone stared at the screen.

The room went completely silent.

It wasn't another criminal.

It wasn't one of Ethan's associates.

It wasn't even Harold.

It was...

Judge Daniel Prescott.

The very judge assigned to Ethan and Vanessa's criminal trial.

Sarah stood up so quickly her chair fell backward.

"Impossible."

The FBI director's expression hardened.

"Nothing is impossible anymore."

An emergency investigation began immediately.

Judge Prescott's financial records were subpoenaed.

Within hours, investigators uncovered a series of hidden offshore transfers totaling nearly twelve million dollars over the past decade.

Every payment traced back to shell companies connected to Harold Whitmore.

The man trusted to deliver justice...

Had secretly been protecting the people on trial.

If Harold had not died...

If the videotape had never surfaced...

Vanessa might have walked free.

That evening, federal agents arrested Judge Prescott at his own home.

Television cameras captured the moment.

Still wearing his judicial robe, he was led down the courthouse steps in handcuffs.

America watched in disbelief.

One of Illinois' most respected judges had allegedly spent years helping bury evidence, dismiss investigations, and influence legal proceedings tied to Harold's network.

The scandal exploded nationwide.

But as shocking as it was...

The FBI still hadn't answered one question.

Who had fired the sniper's rifle?

Three nights later, I returned to my apartment for the first time in weeks.

Security officers surrounded the building.

Every entrance was monitored.

I finally believed I was safe.

I unlocked my front door.

Everything looked untouched.

Until I noticed something on the dining table.

A single white rose.

There hadn't been one when I left.

Beneath it rested a handwritten note.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it.

It contained only one sentence.

"You should have stayed under the bed."

No signature.

No fingerprints.

Only a faint scent of expensive perfume.

The exact same perfume Vanessa had worn on my wedding night.

I immediately called the FBI.

Agents searched every inch of the apartment.

No forced entry.

No surveillance footage.

No DNA.

Nothing.

Whoever had entered my home...

Wanted me to know one thing.

Vanessa wasn't finished.

And somewhere beyond prison walls...

May you like

Someone powerful was still helping her.
