CHAPTER 5 — The Woman Everyone Forgot

Julia looked exhausted.

She couldn't have been older than thirty-five.

Yet grief had aged her far beyond her years.

"I believed he loved me," she said softly.

"He said his mother adored me."

I almost laughed.

Vanessa adored no one.

Not even her own son.

Julia explained everything.

She and Ethan had married seven years earlier.

Six months later, she suffered a mysterious breakdown.

Neighbors claimed she screamed in the middle of the night.

Friends stopped answering her calls.

Her employer quietly dismissed her.

Eventually she signed divorce papers she barely remembered reading.

Only...

Those papers had never been filed.

Someone had forged court documents instead.

Sarah immediately called the courthouse.

Within an hour the answer arrived.

"There is no divorce record."

Julia was still Ethan's legal wife.

The courtroom buzzed with excitement when prosecutors announced the discovery.

Journalists filled every seat.

Vanessa remained expressionless.

Ethan looked terrified.

His attorney requested a recess.

Denied.

Then Julia revealed something even more disturbing.

She hadn't suffered a mental illness.

She had been repeatedly drugged.

A medical specialist compared hospital records from seven years earlier with toxicology reports.

The medications matched exactly.

Sedatives.

Memory suppressants.

Powerful enough to confuse reality.

Suddenly...

Every joke Ethan had made about my drinking during our engagement took on a darker meaning.

Every glass of wine he insisted on pouring himself.

Every forgotten evening.

Every unexplained headache.

I felt sick.

Had he already begun preparing me?

The prosecutor asked one question.

"Mrs. Lawson..."

Julia still carried Ethan's surname.

"Why didn't you come forward earlier?"

She smiled sadly.

"Because no one believed poor women."

Then she looked directly at me.

"But they'll believe us together."

For the first time since my wedding...

I realized I wasn't fighting alone.

That evening another former victim appeared.

Then another.

By Friday...

There were nine women.

Nine broken marriages.

Nine stolen properties.

Nine lives manipulated by the same family.

Each believed she had been the only one.

Each carried shame that had never belonged to her.

Vanessa watched from the defense table.

For the first time...

The woman who enjoyed judging everyone else realized an entire courtroom was judging her.

But the biggest secret still hadn't surfaced.

Because federal investigators had finally unlocked Ethan's encrypted laptop.

Inside...

They found a folder labeled:

May you like

PROJECT BRIDE.
