CHAPTER 9 — The Truth About My Mother

Against everyone's advice...
I went.
Not alone.
Only Harold believed I was alone.
The FBI surveillance team stayed several blocks away.
Hidden.
Waiting.
The meeting place was an abandoned conservatory overlooking Lake Michigan.
Broken glass covered the floor.
Moonlight poured through the cracked ceiling.
Harold Whitmore stood beside a grand piano covered in dust.
He looked nothing like the monster I imagined.
He looked like someone's gentle grandfather.
Which made him even more dangerous.
"You came," he smiled.
"I came for answers."
He opened a weathered leather briefcase.
Inside was a videotape.
Several letters.
And an old silver locket.
I recognized it instantly.
It had belonged to my mother.
The one police never recovered after the accident.
My hands shook.
"Where did you get that?"
Harold sighed.
"Because I was there."
Every instinct in my body screamed.
"What do you mean?"
"I was supposed to meet your mother that afternoon."
"Vanessa wanted one last chance to clear her name."
My breathing became uneven.
"My mother agreed?"
"She believed people deserved second chances."
Harold looked away.
"That kindness cost her everything."
According to Harold, the meeting became an argument.
Vanessa demanded millions of dollars.
My mother refused.
Vanessa threatened to destroy Apex Development.
My mother walked away.
Moments later...
Her car's brakes failed.
Harold admitted he had helped cover up the truth.
Not because he wanted my mother dead.
Because exposing Vanessa would have exposed himself.
For fifteen years...
He carried that secret.
Then something happened that no one expected.
Harold handed me the videotape.
"This is the original security footage."
"It proves Vanessa tampered with the vehicle."
I stared at him.
"Why give this to me now?"
His shoulders slumped.
"Because I'm dying."
Terminal cancer.
Only months left.
"I've spent twenty years pretending I was a respectable man."
"I don't want to die as a coward."
Before another word could be spoken...
A gunshot shattered the silence.
The window exploded.
Harold staggered backward.
Blood spread across his white shirt.
Sniper.
The FBI rushed in.
Agents surrounded the building.
Chaos erupted.
Harold grabbed my sleeve with surprising strength.
His final words barely rose above a whisper.
"Don't trust..."
Another gunshot echoed.
Harold collapsed before he could finish.
"Don't trust who?" I screamed.
But he was already gone.
The sniper escaped into the darkness.
The videotape remained in my hands.
And somewhere...
The last person Harold tried to warn me about was still alive.
Watching.
Waiting.

Much closer than any of us realized.
