CHAPTER 2 — The Billionaire Father They Never Expected

At seven o'clock the following morning, I woke before sunrise.
Not because I had slept.
Because I hadn't.
The recordings from the night before had been copied into six different locations.
My phone.
A cloud drive.
A secure server.
A flash drive hidden inside my makeup bag.
Another inside my bouquet.
And one already sitting in my attorney's inbox.
If anything happened to me...
Everything would automatically be released.
People born into powerful families learn one lesson very early.
Never keep only one copy.
At breakfast Ethan looked flawless.
He smiled.
Held my chair.
Kissed my cheek.
Asked whether I had slept well.
I looked directly into his eyes.
"Perfectly."
The lie sounded effortless.
Apparently...
I'd learned from the best.
Vanessa arrived wearing pearls.
"So," she smiled.
"When are you two signing the final property paperwork?"
Ethan squeezed my hand beneath the table.
"The lawyer can visit next week."
I pretended to hesitate.
"If that's what everyone thinks is best..."
Three smiles appeared around the table.
Predators.
Certain their prey had surrendered.
Then the restaurant manager hurried toward us.
"Mrs. Carter..."
He looked nervous.
"Your father has arrived."
Vanessa frowned.
"I thought Emma's father was some retired teacher."
I smiled.
"You'll meet him in a second."
The restaurant doors opened.
Every employee stood perfectly straight.
The entire dining room became silent.
Six security officers entered first.
Then two executives.
Finally...
A tall silver-haired man wearing a navy suit.
Richard Carter.
Founder of Apex Development.
One of the wealthiest real estate developers in America.
Vanessa dropped her coffee cup.
Ethan turned completely pale.
"No..."
Richard looked directly at me.
"Good morning, sweetheart."
He kissed my forehead.
Then faced Ethan.
"So..."
"You must be the young man who married my daughter."
No one spoke.
No one breathed.
Vanessa whispered,
"You... you're that Richard Carter?"
He smiled politely.
"I usually am."
The color disappeared from Ethan's face.
His fork slipped onto the plate.
"You never told me..."
"I wanted someone who loved Emma."
Richard answered.
"Not my last name."
Silence.
Beautiful.
Heavy.
Crushing silence.
Vanessa forced an awkward laugh.
"Well...
Families should be honest with each other..."
Richard slowly turned toward her.
"I agree."
His voice became colder.
"So perhaps honesty should begin today."
He placed a small envelope onto the table.
Inside were copies of every recording transcript.
Every conversation from the bridal suite.
Every criminal plan.
Every betrayal.
Every lie.
Ethan opened the first page.
By page three...
His hands were shaking.
By page five...
Claire's pregnancy was no longer the biggest secret at the table.
Because Richard calmly looked at Ethan and said,
"I've already contacted federal investigators."
"And this..."
He tapped the folder.
May you like
"...is only the beginning."
