Chapter 14 - The Midnight Visitor

The city was fast asleep when the private security intercom chimed softly.

It was past midnight. Arthur was working late in his study, and I was up nursing Maya, who had refused to settle for the night. I walked through the dimly lit penthouse corridor toward the grand foyer, expecting a routine delivery from international legal counsel.

Instead, the private elevator doors opened to reveal a figure I never expected to see standing outside my doors again.

It was Cynthia.

Gone was the arrogant socialite in the designer silk dress who had laughed at me through the Greenwich window. She wore a worn-out trench coat, her hair pulled back into a messy knot, her face pale and hollowed out by months of hiding from creditors across Europe.

She took a hesitant step forward, stopping short as she saw the baby cradled against my chest.

"Clara," she breathed, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "Please... don't call security. I have nowhere left to go."

I stood tall, my arm securely wrapped around Maya, who stared up with wide, curious eyes. "Cynthia. You have a great deal of nerve stepping foot near this building."

"I know," she sobbed softly, dropping her gaze to the floor. "Raymond... he lied to me. He told me he was worth millions, that his family controlled half of New York. By the time I realized he was bankrupt, my own accounts were frozen because of his federal indictments. I’ve been living in a cheap hostel in Brooklyn, running from people looking to collect his debts."

She looked up, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "He ruined my life, Clara. Just like he tried to ruin yours."

"No, Cynthia," I corrected, my tone level and unyielding. "Raymond didn't ruin your life. Your own greed did. You stepped into a life that wasn't yours, built on a foundation of lies, because you thought you could displace me without consequence."

Cynthia collapsed against the marble pillar, weeping openly into her hands.

"Please," she whispered. "Just... tell Mr. Sterling to call off his collection agents. I'll leave the country. I'll never come back."

"Arthur doesn't waste his time chasing ghosts," I said quietly, turning my back on her. "And as for your debts? Handle them yourself. Just like I had to handle mine on a freezing Greenwich sidewalk."

The elevator doors closed silently behind me, sealing her fate in the dark.
