Chapter 19 - Beyond the Horizon


Spring bloomed once again across the East Coast, painting the gardens of the Greenwich estate in vibrant shades of pink and gold.
The trials were entirely behind us. The tabloids had found new scandals to chase, and the name Whitmore had faded into the obscure footnotes of corporate history.
I sat on the stone patio overlooking the fountains, watching my three children chase butterflies across the emerald grass. Arthur sat beside me, sketching architectural drafts for a new youth center we were funding upstate.
"You’ve been uncharacteristically quiet this afternoon," Arthur noted, looking up from his sketchbook with a warm, knowing smile. "Thinking about the next corporate acquisition?"
"No," I laughed softly, looking out toward the open iron gates where cars passed freely without judgment or fear. "I was just thinking about Bar Harbor. My father’s old boat."
"Ah. The deep water," Arthur murmured, setting his pen down.
"Yes," I nodded, resting my hands comfortably over my lap. "He always told me you never beg anyone to recognize your worth. You live until they have no choice but to see it."

"And look at you now," Arthur said, reaching over to squeeze my hand gently. "They couldn't look away even if they tried."
I smiled, watching Maya trip softly on the grass before popping right back up with a bright, fearless laugh, running forward without a single trace of hesitation.
