Chapter 8 - The Price of Cruelty

"Get up, Raymond," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "You’re embarrassing yourself."

He stayed on the floor, clutching at my shoes like a drowning man. "You can’t keep them from me. I have rights—"

"You gave up your rights the moment you put my suitcase on the gravel," a deep, resonant voice interrupted. Arthur stepped forward, standing directly over Raymond like a executioner. "Under the terms of the settlement, and given your upcoming federal indictment for corporate embezzlement, your parental rights have been entirely terminated and signed over to me and Clara."

Raymond’s head whipped up, his eyes wide with absolute terror. "You can't do that! Clara, tell him!"

"My name is Clara Vance," I corrected softly, stepping back out of his reach. "Not Mrs. Whitmore. Clara Vance. Remember that, Raymond. It’s the only name my children will ever carry."

Before Raymond could scream or lunge forward, two security guards materialized at his sides, grabbing him by the shoulders and dragging him bodily out of the penthouse. His desperate cries echoed down the hallway until the heavy oak doors clicked shut, cutting him off from my world forever.

Margaret suffered a severe stroke two days later upon learning that the Greenwich estate had been legally transferred to my name, converted into a charitable trust for single mothers in crisis. She was left mute, confined to a wheelchair in a modest nursing facility, entirely dependent on nurses who didn't know her name and didn't care to learn it.
