Chapter 1 - The Precipice of LiesThe shattered glass from the balcony doors glittered under the grand chandelier of the Blackwood Manor like fallen stars. Rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, drowning out the faint siren wails echoing in the distance.

Claireās fingers slipped against Ethanās wet sleeves. Her chest heaved violently, each gasp drawing in cold night air and the thick, suffocating metallic tang of blood.
"Ethan..." she whimpered, her vision swimming with darkness.
"Look at me! Stay with me, Claire!" Ethan yelled, clutching her shoulders tightly. His face was a mask of sheer panic, his tailored suit soaked in raindrops and blood. He spun around toward the huddled crowd of panicked socialites. "Call an ambulance! Call the police, NOW!"
Standing just three feet away, draped in a ruined silk emerald gown, Eleanor didn't move. Her hands were still trembling, hovering in the air where she had pushedāor tried to saveāClaire moments before. Her cold, piercing gray eyes met Ethan's. There was no terror in them. Only a calculated, chilling stillness.
"You shouldn't have come back, Claire," Eleanor whispered again, her voice barely audible over the roaring thunder outside, yet cutting through the chaos like a razor blade.
The house maid, Martha, scrambled across the marble floor with a thick bath towel, sobbing as she tried to press it against Claireās bleeding forehead. "Oh Lord, Miss Claire! Keep your eyes open, please! The paramedics are five minutes away!"
Ethan lifted Claire carefully into his arms, ignoring Eleanor entirely. "If she dies, Eleanor," Ethan growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low pitch as he passed his sister-in-law, "I will personally ensure you rot in a cell for the rest of your life."
Eleanor smiledāa faint, terrifying twitch of her red lips. "Are you sure you want the police looking into this house, Ethan? Because once they start digging, nobody here gets out clean."
Before Ethan could demand an answer, the front double doors burst open. Flashlights pierced the gloom as red and blue strobe lights painted the foyer walls. Paramedics rushed in with a stretcher, followed closely by Detective Richard Vance of the City Homicide and Major Crimes Division.
"What happened here?!" Detective Vance demanded, his eyes sweeping over the blood-stained marble, the shattered balcony balustrade, and the quiet woman standing in the center of the storm.
"She pushed her!" the wealthy guest pointed a trembling finger at Eleanor. "I saw it with my own eyes! Eleanor pushed Claire off the upper mezzanine balcony!"
Detective Vance locked eyes with Eleanor. "Is this true, Miss Blackwood?"
Eleanor didn't flinch. She slowly raised her blood-stained hands, looking directly into the detective's eyes.

"She jumped," Eleanor said calmly. "And if Ethan had been three seconds later... he would have pushed her himself."
CHAPTER 1 HOOK: The entire room froze. Ethanās grip on the stretcher tightened until his knuckles turned white. Claireās eyes suddenly fluttered open, her faint voice whispering two words that changed everything: "He... lied..."
