Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Leather

The luxury limousine slipped into the quiet rain of the Philadelphia night like a silent, armored beast. Inside, the world was a sensory sensory bubble: the rich, heavy scent of custom-treated leather, the sharp and clean note of aged cedar, and the deep, dark aroma of single-malt Scotch lingering in the air.
On the floorboards, pressed tightly between the seats, Veronica held her breath. Her heart hammered so violently against her ribs she was certain the vibration would shake the car. The silk and tulle of her ruined wedding dress felt like cold, wet armor, smelling of cheap church incense, street dirt, and her own panic.
The back door clicked. The heavy, customized suspension of the vehicle dipped slightly under a man's weight.
Austo Castillion did not look down. He sat with a smooth, lethal grace, his long legs crossing elegantly. Even from her position on the floorboards, Veronica could smell him—an intoxicatingly dangerous blend of expensive tobacco, ozone from the storm, and a rare woodsy cologne that seemed to promise both safety and absolute ruin.
"Drive, Tobia," Austo said.
His voice was a low, resonant baritone, entirely free of the nervous speed that characterized her father's associates. It was the voice of a man who ruled by silence.
The car glided forward. For three agonizing blocks, the only sound was the soft patter of rain against the reinforced glass. Veronica lay perfectly still, her bare, bleeding feet tucked beneath her soaked hem. She knew that if she moved, if she gasped, she would be revealing herself to the "Grim Reaper of Broad Street."
Suddenly, the limousine slowed to a smooth stop at a red light.
Austo reached for the crystal decanter on the side console. As he poured a small amber splash into his glass, his dark, piercing eyes drifted downward.
He didn't jump. He didn't swear. He merely paused, the glass hovering an inch from his lips as his gaze locked onto the shivering pile of white tulle and bruised flesh wedged near his hand-made Italian leather shoes.
"Tobia," Austo said softly, his voice dropping to a dangerous, velvety purr. "Pull over."
"Sir?" the driver asked, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror.
"Now."

The car glided to the curb. Austo set his glass down with a soft, ominous clink. He leaned forward, his massive shoulders blocking out the dim light from the console, his presence instantly consuming the entire compartment.
"You have exactly three seconds to tell me why the Bellucci family's prized possession is hiding on my floorboards," Austo murmured, his eyes scanning her pale face, "before I throw you back out into the rain for Olindo to find."
