Chapter 8 - The Mark of the Wolf

BANG!
A single shot echoed through the warehouse, drowning out the remaining gunfire.
Olindo froze, his eyes widening in a look of sheer, unadulterated shock. He slowly dropped his pistol, his hands reaching toward his chest where a perfect, dark red circle was rapidly spreading across his white dress shirt.
He collapsed to the concrete floor with a dull, hollow thud.
Behind him stood Austo, his pistol still raised, a thin wisp of smoke curling from the barrel. His eyes were cold, dead, and entirely devoid of mercy.
"No one touches what is mine," Austo whispered, his voice carrying an absolute, terrifying finality that made the remaining mercenaries in the rafters instantly retreat.
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the steady dripping of rain from the shattered skylights.
Silvio Bellucci stood near the far wall, his hands raised in surrender, his face entirely drained of color as he looked at the body of his chosen son-in-law.
"Austo... please," Silvio stammered, his voice shaking. "I didn't know about the Morello trap. I swear to you, I didn't know."
Austo walked slowly toward him, his boots clicking against the wet concrete. He stopped inches from the older man, his presence towering over him like an executioner.
"You sold your own daughter to a dog, Silvio," Austo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "You are no longer fit to run this city. You will sign the northern docks over to my syndicate by morning, and you will retire to your villa in Florida. If I see your face in Philadelphia again, I will ensure you join Olindo."
Silvio nodded frantically, his hand shaking as he reached for his pocket to find a pen.

Austo turned back to the limousine, his hard expression softening the moment his eyes met Veronica's pale, trembling face. He walked to her, knelt down, and pulled her into his arms, holding her so tightly she could feel the heat of his skin through his torn shirt.
"It's over, cara," he whispered into her hair. "You're safe."
