Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Treaty

The meeting with the Commission was set for that evening at a neutral warehouse in the industrial heart of the city.
Austo refused to leave Veronica at the estate. "If I leave you here, they will find a way to breach the gates," he told her as they rode in the back of the armored limousine. "Beside me is the only safe place in this city tonight."
This time, Veronica sat on the leather seat beside him, her hand resting comfortably near his on the console. She felt a strange, thrilling warmth in his presence—a feeling of absolute safety that she had never experienced in her father's house.
The warehouse was cold, smelling of rust, wet concrete, and the heavy exhaust of idling luxury vehicles.
At the center of the room sat a long wooden table. Don Silvio Bellucci stood at one end, his face pale and lined with stress, while Olindo Valeri stood beside him, his eyes bloodshot and his hands twitching with rage.
"Castillion," Silvio said, his voice shaking as he saw Veronica step out of the car beside Austo. "You have crossed a line. Return my daughter, and we can discuss a peaceful resolution to the dock dispute."
"She is not a commodity for your negotiation, Silvio," Austo said, his voice echoing through the vast, empty warehouse with an absolute, chilling authority.
"She is my wife!" Olindo roared, taking a step forward, his hand reaching into his jacket. "We signed the papers! She belongs to me!"
"She signed nothing under her own free will," Austo countered, his hand gently but protectively holding Veronica behind his shoulder. "And as of nine o'clock last night, she is under the protection of the Castillion Syndicate. If you want her back, Olindo, you will have to take her from my cold, dead hands."
"Then so be all-out war," Silvio whispered.

Before anyone could move, a sharp, metallic click sounded from the rafters above.
"Down!" Austo screamed.
