Chapter 4 - The Fortress on the Hill

The limousine arrived at the Castillion estate—a massive, imposing stone manor nestled deep within the private forests of Fairmount Park. Surrounded by high iron gates and guarded by silent, heavily armed soldiers in long black coats, it looked more like a medieval fortress than a modern home.
Austo did not ask her to walk. He stepped out into the rain, reached back into the car, and lifted her into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all.
Her wet white dress draped over his arm like a torn shroud, her bare feet dangling against his dark trousers.
"Take her to the East Wing," Austo ordered the housekeeper, a stern, silent woman named Clara, as they entered the grand foyer. "Get her out of that wet silk, tend to her wounds, and ensure she has everything she needs. She is not to leave her room without my express permission."
"Yes, Mr. Castillion," Clara replied, bowing her head.
"Austo," Veronica called out as he turned to leave.
He stopped, his hand resting on the heavy banister of the marble staircase. "Yes?"
"The shipping manifests... they aren't at the docks," she said, deciding to reveal a fraction of the truth to keep him interested. "They are kept in a safe behind the portrait of my grandfather in my father's study. The code is changed every Monday."
Austo's face remained unreadable, but his eyes flashed with a cold satisfaction. "Rest, Veronica. We will talk about your father's safe tomorrow."

For the first time in her life, Veronica slept in a bed that didn't feel like a cage. The sheets were clean, cool silk, and the room smelled of lavender and fresh-cut pine. Yet, as she lay in the dark, she couldn't erase the memory of the warm, steady beat of Austo's heart against her palm.
She had escaped one monster, only to throw herself into the arms of a far more powerful one.
