Chapter 5 - The Price of Treason

By morning, the city of Philadelphia was on the verge of an explosion.
The news of the Bellucci bride escaping her own wedding had spread through the underworld like wildfire. Her father, Don Silvio Bellucci, had reportedly placed a five-million-dollar bounty on her return, dead or alive.
Veronica sat at the small wooden table in the sunlit conservatory of the estate, wearing a simple, borrowed dark blue dress. Her hair was dry, falling in soft waves over her shoulders, and her feet were neatly bandaged.
"You have caused a very expensive mess, Veronica," Austo said, walking into the room with a morning newspaper in his hand.
He threw the paper onto the table. The front page featured a prominent photo of her in her wedding gown, with a headline proclaiming her mysterious disappearance.
"My father will not stop," she said quietly, staring at her own face on the newsprint. "And Olindo... Olindo is a prideful man. He will burn the city down to find me."
"Let him try," Austo said, sitting opposite her. He looked refreshed, his dark suit immaculate, smelling of that same intoxicating cedarwood and rain. "My soldiers have already secured the borders of the northern district. If a single Bellucci soldier crosses the line, they will be met with immediate force."
"And the safe?" she asked.
Austo leaned forward, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. "My men checked the house last night. Your father has moved the safe. The portrait of your grandfather is gone, replaced by a steel door with a biometrics lock. It seems he anticipated your little rebellion."
Veronica's heart sank. "I didn't know. I swear, I didn't know he would move it."
"I believe you," Austo said, his voice surprisingly soft. He reached across the table, his fingers gently lifting her chin so she was forced to meet his gaze. "But now we have a problem. Your father has contacted the Commission. He is claiming I kidnapped you to force a renegotiation of the docks. If I do not return you by tomorrow evening, the Commission will authorize a joint strike against my syndicate."

"Are you going to give me back?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Austo's fingers slid from her chin to her cheek, his thumb tracing the soft line of her jaw. "I have never returned a single thing that entered my house, Veronica. Especially not something as beautiful as you."
