Chapter 3 - The Collision of Empires

"With pleasure, boss," Tobia replied.

The heavy, custom-built V8 engine of the armored limousine roared to life with a terrifying growl. Tobia slammed the vehicle into reverse, slamming the rear bumper directly into the front of Olindo’s lead SUV with a sickening, metallic crunch.

"Hold on," Austo said, his large hand instantly coming down over Veronica's waist, pinning her securely to the leather seat as the car spun forward.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Olindo's men opened fire, but the heavy caliber bullets merely left dull, grey smudges on the reinforced glass of the limousine. Tobia spun the wheel, utilizing the heavy steel chassis of the car as a battering ram, clearing a path through the blockade and surging into the dark, rain-swept avenue.

Behind them, the headlights of the SUVs pursued them like angry eyes, but they were no match for Tobia’s intimate knowledge of the city’s back alleys. Within minutes, the sound of gunfire and sirens faded into the steady hum of the rain.

Veronica lay panting against Austo's chest, her fingers still desperately clutching his lapel. She could hear the slow, steady rhythm of his heartbeat—completely calm, as if they had just taken a leisurely drive through the park.

"You can let go now," he murmured, his fingers gently but firmly wrapping around her wrists, lifting her hands away from his chest.

"I... I'm sorry," she whispered, pulling her hands back, her face flushing red in the dim light of the console.

Austo looked down at her bare feet, which were covered in small, bleeding cuts from the cobblestones. He reached for a clean, white linen handkerchief from his pocket and knelt down on the floorboards before her.

"What are you doing?" she gasped, trying to pull her feet away.

"Be quiet," he commanded gently, his large hands capturing her ankle.

His touch was remarkably warm, his long fingers firm as he used the soft linen to gently wipe away the dirt and blood from her sole. Veronica held her breath, her entire body tingling from the sudden, unexpected intimacy.

"You are a terrible runaway, Veronica," Austo said, not looking up as he carefully bound the deepest cut. "No shoes, no money, and you choose to hide in the car of the man who is currently trying to dismantle your father's entire legacy."

"It was the only car my father was afraid of," she said softly.

Austo paused, his eyes lifting to meet hers in the shadows. "He was right to be afraid."
