Chapter 9 - The Queen of Broad Street

Three months passed, and the city of Philadelphia experienced a peace it had not known in decades.

With the Bellucci family retired and the Morello syndicate entirely dismantled by Austo’s ruthless campaign, the Castillion family held undisputed control over the entire East Coast shipping lanes.

But the biggest change was not on the docks.

The gates of the Castillion estate were opened for the first time in ten years. The dark, gloomy halls of the stone mansion were filled with the bright, sweet scents of fresh white lilies, eucalyptus, and a custom-blended cedarwood fragrance that had become the signature of the house.

Veronica stood in the sunlit conservatory, her hair styled in elegant waves, wearing a beautiful, flowing dark green velvet dress that matched the deep forest surrounding the estate.

"You're doing it again," Austo said, walking into the room with a glass of lemonade in his hand.

He wrapped his large, warm arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his solid chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin of her neck.

"Doing what?" she asked, a soft smile touching her lips as she leaned back into his embrace.

"Staring at the gates as if you're waiting for someone to chase you," he murmured, his hands resting comfortably over her flat stomach.

"I'm not waiting for anyone," she whispered, turning in his arms to face him. "The only man I ever ran from is dead, and the only man I want to stay with is holding me."

Austo smiled, a genuine, warm expression that he reserved only for her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.

"I believe this belongs to you," he said, opening the latch.

Inside sat a stunning, custom-designed ring made of white gold, featuring two crossed silver swords beneath a small, flawless blue sapphire crown. It was the crest of the Castillion family, but scaled down to fit her delicate finger.

"An investment?" she teased, raising her hand so he could slide the ring onto her finger.

"A treaty," Austo corrected softly, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of sweet rain, warm earth, and the absolute certainty of a shared future. "You entered my car as a runaway, Veronica. But you are leaving it as my queen."
