Chapter 10 - The Legend of the Runaway Bride

The annual Winter Gala at the Academy of Music was the most prestigious event of the year, bringing together the wealthiest and most powerful figures on the East Coast.
As the heavy double doors of the grand ballroom opened, a collective gasp rippled through the three hundred guests.
Austo Castillion descended the grand marble staircase, his hand resting securely on the arm of a breathtaking woman wearing a custom-tailored, dark midnight-blue silk gown. She wore no veil, her dark hair falling in elegant waves over her shoulders, her sapphire ring gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.
They didn't look like a couple bound by a contract. They looked like rulers who had conquered a city together.
At the edge of the dance floor, a young reporter from the local paper mustered the courage to step forward, his microphone trembling as he approached the powerful couple.
"Mrs. Castillion... if I may," the reporter stammered, his eyes darting to the silent, heavily armed guards standing at the perimeter of the room. "The stories say you escaped your wedding in a torn white dress and hid in a stranger's car to save your life. Is it true?"
Veronica stopped, her hand tightening affectionately on Austo's arm. She looked down at the reporter, then up at her husband, whose dark eyes were looking down at her with an absolute, unwavering devotion.
"No," Veronica said, her voice clear and resonant, carrying across the silent ballroom. "I didn't hide in a stranger's car to save my life. I entered my husband's car to finally start living it."

As the orchestra began to play a slow, beautiful waltz, Austo pulled her onto the floor, his large hand capturing her waist as they spun under the brilliant lights, leaving the dark shadows of their past far behind them in the rain.
