Chapter 2 - The Cage of Echoes

The basement of the Sterling Manor was not a cellar; it was a subterranean bunker built during the Cold War, retrofitted into a high-tech black site for the family's dirtiest secrets.
Maya lay on the cold steel cot, her wrist bruised where the zip-ties had bound her. The room smelled of ozone and damp concrete. Above her, the faint vibrations of the mansion told her that the world was moving on without her. But she wasn't panicking. She couldn't afford to.
She reached into the lining of her boot.
They missed it.
Her fingers pulled out a tiny, micro-SD card—the backup recording of Celeste’s final voice message, sent from the Swiss clinic minutes before her heart stopped. Maya had risked everything to get inside this house under the guise of a temporary housemaid while her sister, Eva, played the nanny. Eva had been discovered and fired three hours ago, but Maya had managed to stay behind long enough to plant the poison.
Suddenly, the heavy iron door whined on its hinges.
A figure slipped into the room, silhouetted against the harsh fluorescent light of the hallway. It wasn't Richard. It wasn't Eleanor.
It was Julian.
His shirt was torn, his collar unbuttoned, and his hands were covered in fresh blood from where he had shattered the glass of his own locked study upstairs. In his left hand, he held a suppressed pistol; in his right, a ring of master security keys stolen from a unconscious guard outside.
"Julian," Maya gasped, sitting up.
"Keep your voice down," Julian rasped. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark circles of exhaustion and rage. "The security feeds are looped for forty seconds. We have to move."
"Where is Noah?" Maya demanded, grabbing his forearm. "Where is my nephew?!"
"Eleanor has him locked in the east wing nursery under heavy sedation. She’s calling in a private medical team to ship him to a board school in Switzerland tonight. She wants to wipe his memory, Maya. Just like she tried to rewrite mine."
Julian inserted the key into her handcuffs, clicking them open. Maya rubbed her raw wrists, looking at the man she had spent months hating. He wasn't the cold, uncaring billionaire tyrant her sister had described. He was a broken father, trapped in a gilded cage constructed by his own mother.
"Why are you helping me?" Maya asked, her voice cautious. "An hour ago, you looked like you wanted to strangle me."
"An hour ago, I thought my wife ran away because she hated me," Julian said, his voice cracking on the word wife. "I spent five years believing I was unlovable. But Celeste... she died calling my name. And my mother watched her die."
He handed Maya a small 9mm handgun. "We aren't leaving this house alone. We take Noah, and we burn Eleanor’s kingdom to the ground."
"It's not that simple, Julian," Maya warned, standing up and pulling the micro-SD card from her pocket. "Eleanor doesn't just control the house. She controls the police, the judiciary, and the media. If we try to flee with Noah, she will report us for armed kidnapping. You’ll spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison, and Noah will end up back in her hands."
Julian stared at the tiny card in her hand. "What is that?"
"Celeste’s confession. And the proof that Eleanor ordered the medical staff in Switzerland to delay her C-section until Celeste was too weak to survive," Maya said, her teeth grinding together. "Your mother didn't just hide Noah. She murdered my sister."
A heavy silence fell over the bunker. The air grew cold. Julian’s grip on his gun tightened until his knuckles turned translucent.
"Then we don't flee," Julian whispered, a lethal darkness settling into his tone. "We go to the Gala tonight."
Tonight was the Sterling Foundation’s 50th Anniversary Gala—the biggest social event of the decade, attended by prime ministers, media moguls, and global elites. Eleanor was scheduled to introduce Noah as the sole heir to the Sterling fortune at midnight.
"You want to expose her in front of the world?" Maya asked.
"No," Julian replied, looking up with eyes that burned like dying stars. "Exposing her gives her lawyers a chance to spin it. I want to ruin her so completely that even her money can't save her from the wolves."
May you like
Before Maya could respond, the alarm system above them began to blare—a high-pitched screech echoing down the concrete corridors. Red emergency lights began to flash.
"They found the guards," Julian said, cocking his weapon. "Run!"
