Chapter 3 - The Blood-Red Carpet

The Grand Palais in the heart of the city was transformed into a sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, and flashing camera bulbs. Over five hundred of the most powerful people on Earth sat at golden tables beneath crystal chandeliers, drinking champagne that cost more than a worker's annual salary.

At the head table sat Madam Eleanor Sterling, looking regal in a custom emerald gown. Her hair was swept up into a immaculate chignon, and a five-carat diamond necklace glittered around her wrinkled neck. Beside her sat little Noah, dressed in a miniature tuxedo. The boy looked pale, his eyes glossy from the mild sedatives Eleanor’s doctors had slipped into his juice.

"Smile, darling," Eleanor murmured softly, her fingers tightening around Noah’s shoulder like iron talons. "The cameras are watching. You are a Sterling. You do not cry."

"I want Daddy..." Noah whimpered, a single tear spilling over his cheek. "I want Eva..."

"Daddy is sick, Noah. Daddy is going away for a very long time," Eleanor whispered, her voice smooth as venom. "And Eva is dead to us."

At the main podium, the master of ceremonies took the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests... tonight, we celebrate fifty years of Sterling Global. Please welcome our Chairman, Madam Eleanor Sterling!"

The room erupted into applause. Eleanor stood up gracefully, smoothing her dress, and walked toward the stage. She smiled at the flashing cameras, basking in the adoration of a world that worshipped her wealth.

She reached the podium, resting her hands on the polished wood.

"Thank you," Eleanor began, her voice echoing through the massive auditorium. "Fifty years ago, my late husband and I built this company on a simple principle: strength, discretion, and absolute loyalty. Today, as I prepare to hand over the future of this empire to the next generation—my beloved grandson, Noah—I am reminded of the sacrifices required to maintain an unbroken legacy..."

BZZZZZT.

The massive LED screens behind Eleanor flickered violently. The high-definition graphics of the Sterling logo distorted into static.

The applause died instantly. The audience began to whisper. Eleanor paused, her eyes narrowing as she glanced at the tech booth in the back of the room. She saw her security team scrambling, frantically pounding on the control panels.

"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor demanded into the microphone, but her voice was cut off as the audio feed cut to static.

The light in the auditorium slammed shut, plunging five hundred billionaires into complete darkness.

Gasps and shrieks echoed through the room. Cell phone lights clicked on, casting long, eerie shadows against the high ceilings.

Then, a voice boomed from the surround-sound speakers—not Eleanor’s, but a soft, trembling female voice recording from five years ago.

“Julian... if you are listening to this... it means I am dead. They told me you didn't want the baby. They told me you signed the papers... but I know you. I know the man who held me in the rain... They are taking my child, Julian. Madam Eleanor... she told the doctors to wait... she’s letting me bleed...”

"Turn it off!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking as she slammed her fist onto the podium. "Turn it off right now! Security!"

The massive LED screens burst back to life, but they didn't show corporate videos. They showed high-definition scans of Swiss medical logs, bank transfers signed by Eleanor Sterling paying $2 million to a private mortuary, and a forged death certificate.

And then, the center doors of the ballroom swung open.

A single spotlight hit the aisle.

Walking down the red carpet, flanked by two armed federal marshals and the Chief of Police, was Julian Sterling. He wore a crisp black suit, but his face was set like granite. Beside him walked Maya, holding a thick red dossier stamped with the seal of the Department of Justice.

The crowd gasped. Camera flashes exploded like lightning strikes. Journalists scrambled over chairs to capture the moment.

"Eleanor Sterling!" the Chief of Police shouted through a megawatt bullhorn, his voice reverberating through the hall. "By order of the Federal Grand Jury, you are under arrest for human trafficking, conspiracy to commit murder, and corporate fraud!"

Eleanor stood frozen at the podium. Her face was no longer that of a matriarch; it was the face of a cornered beast.

"Julian!" Eleanor shrieked, pointing at her son. "How dare you?! I built you! I gave you everything! You would destroy your own mother for a dead peasant?!"

May you like

Julian walked up the steps of the stage, stopping just three feet from her. He looked at her not with hatred, but with a horrifying, absolute pity.

"You didn't build me, Mother," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly through the silent room without a microphone. "You built a prison. And today, the lease is up."
