Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the Estate

Three months later.

The Sterling Manor stood quiet under the overcast autumn sky. The high windows that once illuminated the grand lobby were covered in dust. Moving vans were parked along the cobblestone driveway, loading the last of the antique furniture and paintings to be auctioned off for the charity trust.

Julian stood in the center of the lobby—the exact spot where, ninety days ago, Maya had dropped the silver pocket watch. The polished marble floor was still cold, but the oppressive weight that had hung over the house for decades was gone.

The sound of small, energetic footsteps echoed through the hall.

"Daddy! Look!"

Noah came running across the lobby, holding a bright yellow kite. Behind him walked Eva—who had returned the moment the charges against her were dropped—smiling warmly as she chased the young boy.

Julian caught Noah in his arms, lifting him into the air and spinning him around. Noah’s laughter was loud, clear, and ringing with pure joy. It was a sound that had never been heard in this house before.

"Are we going to the new house today?" Noah asked, his small hands resting on Julian’s shoulders.

"Today," Julian smiled, kissing his forehead. "A house by the ocean. With a giant yard for that kite."

"Is Auntie Maya coming?"

Maya walked through the front doors, wearing a simple denim jacket and carrying two travel bags. She stopped near the entrance, looking around at the empty room.

"Auntie Maya is already here," she said, winking at Noah.

Eva walked over to Julian, her expression turning gentle. "The movers just loaded the last box from the study. The keys have been handed over to the city council. The demolition crew starts tomorrow."

Julian looked up at the high, vaulted ceiling one last time. "Good. Burn it to the ground."

They walked out of the mansion together, leaving behind the shadows, the secrets, and the ghost of a tragic past. As the heavy wooden doors closed for the final time, Julian reached down, holding Noah with one arm and reaching out to take Eva’s hand with the other.

They were no longer a story written in silk and blood. They were just a family, starting over from zero.
