Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the ShadowsSix months after the demolition of Sterling Manor, life on the coast of Maine was peaceful.

Julian had bought a modest three-story wooden house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. He worked as a private legal consultant for non-profit organizations, using his formidable legal brain to fight for families broken by corporate power. Eva was managing a local children's art therapy center, and Noah was thriving in a small local kindergarten, his laugh returning stronger every day.
Maya had moved to Boston to pursue her law degree, funded by her share of her sister's estate settlements, but visited every weekend.
It was a rainy Tuesday evening. Fog rolled in from the sea, blanketing the cliffs in thick grey wool.
Julian sat on the covered porch, listening to the rhythmic crash of the waves against the rocks below. Noah was fast asleep inside, and Eva was in the kitchen brewing tea.
Julian leaned back, sipping his black coffee. For the first time in his life, his mind was quiet.
Then, his phone buzzed on the wooden table.
It was an unknown number with an international country code from Switzerland.
Julian frowned. He set his mug down and answered the call.
"Julian," a voice whispered through the receiver.
Julian’s blood ran cold. The mug slipped from his hand, shattering on the porch floor, spilling hot coffee across his shoes.
The voice on the phone wasn't Eleanor. It wasn't Maya.
It was a woman's voice—soft, raspy, damaged by years of disuse, yet instantly recognizable to every fiber of his soul.
"Julian... please... they told me you were dead..."
Julian’s breath hitched in his chest. His knees buckled, and he grabbed the porch railing to keep from falling.
May you like
"Celeste...?" Julian choked out, his voice a terrified whisper. "No... no, you're dead. I saw the records. You died five years ago!"
"It was a lie, Julian..." the voice wept softly, accompanied by the distinct sound of medical monitors heart-beating in the background. "Eleanor didn't let me die... She kept me in a coma... in a private facility in Zurich... She used my existence to blackmail your father's old board members... Julian... I just woke up..."
