Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Cell

The downfall of Madam Eleanor Sterling was swift, violent, and absolute.
Within forty-eight hours of her arrest, the stock value of Sterling Global crashed by 60%. Federal agents raided the family estate, seizing forty years of encrypted ledgers, offshore accounts, and classified files. The media named it the "Dynasty of Blood" scandal, and Eleanor’s mugshot—looking frail, disheveled, and glaring at the camera—was plastered across every newspaper from New York to Tokyo.
In a high-security detention center on the outskirts of the city, Eleanor sat behind a thick sheet of plexiglass. Her emerald gown had been replaced by an orange jumpsuit. Her hair, once immaculately styled, hung in limp grey strands around her face.
The door on the visitor’s side opened.
Julian walked in and sat down. He looked rested, though a profound sadness remained in his eyes.
"Have you come to laugh at me?" Eleanor spat, her knuckles white as she pressed her hands against the glass. "You think you've won, Julian? The board is ousting you! The company is going bankrupt! You ruined three generations of legacy for revenge!"
"I didn't come to laugh," Julian said softly. "I came to sign the final papers."
He slid a document under the slot in the glass.
Eleanor glanced at it. It was a complete asset liquidation agreement. Julian had used his power as sole remaining executive to transfer all Sterling family assets, real estate, and holdings into an irrevocable trust—managed by an independent board—to fund victims of human trafficking and medical malpractice.
"You... you gave it away?" Eleanor gasped, her breath catching in her throat. She looked at him as if he had lost his mind. "The billions? The land? The shipping lines? You gave them away?!"
"Noah doesn't need your blood money," Julian said cold, steady. "And neither do I. We are moving to the coast. Where no one knows the name Sterling."
"You fool!" Eleanor slammed her fists against the glass, her face contorting into a mask of rage. "You are nothing without that name! I sacrificed my life, my marriage, my soul to build that empire for you! And you threw it in the trash for a ghost and a housemaid!"
Julian stood up. He adjusted his jacket, looking down at the woman who had tormented his existence.
"Celeste wasn't a ghost," Julian said softly. "She was the only real thing I ever had. And Maya and Eva gave my son his life back. That makes them more of a family than you ever were."
He turned to walk away.

"Julian!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing down the sterile hallway. "Julian, come back here! You can't leave me here! I am your mother!"
Julian didn't look back. The heavy steel door clicked shut behind him, leaving Eleanor’s screams to bounce off the concrete walls of her eternal cage.
