Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

The world tilted again.

Julian didn't tell Eva immediately. He left a note, boarded a private charter flight to Zurich that same night, and landed in Switzerland under a storm of freezing rain.

Guided by the coordinates sent to his phone, Julian navigated to an isolated alpine villa hidden deep within the Swiss Alps—a property that had never appeared on any Sterling financial ledger.

He kicked the heavy oak door open, his gun drawn, expecting a trap, an ambush, or a nightmare.

Instead, he found a luxurious medical suite overlooking the snowy peaks. Soft white lights illuminated a room filled with state-of-the-art life support machinery.

Sitting in a wheelchair near the floor-to-ceiling window was a woman. Her hair was long and silver-grey, her skin pale as marble, her frame thin and frail. But when she turned her head, those emerald green eyes were unmistakably Celeste’s.

"Julian..." she sobbed, reaching out a fragile, trembling hand.

Julian dropped his gun to the floor. Tears blinded his eyes as he rushed forward, falling to his knees before her, burying his face in her lap.

"How... how is this possible?" Julian wept, holding her icy hands against his face. "I mourned you for five years... I hated you, then I loved you, then I blamed myself..."

"It wasn't Eleanor who put me here, Julian," Celeste whispered, her eyes wide with a terrifying, hollow dread.

Julian froze. He lifted his head, looking at her in confusion. "What?"

"Eleanor was a tyrant, yes," Celeste rasped, her thumb tracing the line of Julian’s jaw. "She stole Noah to raise him as a Sterling. But she didn't forge my death certificate. She didn't put me in a coma."

"Then who did?" Julian demanded, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped bird.

The sound of footsteps echoed down the marble hallway outside the room. Slow, rhythmic, confident footsteps.

A man stepped into the doorway, shaking his dripping umbrella and taking off his tailored leather gloves.

It was Richard Vance—Eleanor’s former head of security, the man who had served the Sterling family for twenty years.

"Hello, Julian," Richard said, a soft, pleasant smile on his face. "I see you finally followed the breadcrumbs."

Julian stood up slowly, placing himself between Richard and Celeste. "Richard. What is this?"

"This, my dear Julian, is the real game," Richard said, taking a silver cigarette case from his pocket and lighting one. "Your mother was a arrogant, shortsighted woman. She thought money bought everything. But she was predictable. Easy to manipulate."

"You... you kept Celeste alive?" Julian asked, his mind struggling to connect the dots.

"I kept her alive because she was my insurance policy," Richard chuckled, blowing a ring of grey smoke into the air. "Twenty years ago, your father made a secret deal with me. If Eleanor ever tried to bankrupt the company or split the family, I was ordered to execute a fail-safe. I faked Celeste’s death, fed Eleanor the false documents, and let Eleanor believe she was the one committing the crime."

Richard walked closer, his eyes cold as ice. "I let Maya and Eva expose Eleanor. I let you liquidate the Sterling assets into that 'charity trust'—the trust that I secretly control through a network of shell corporations in Panama. You thought you were being a hero, Julian. But you were just doing my paperwork for me."

"You took everything," Julian said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "You destroyed my family, my wife, my son's childhood... for money?"

"Not for money, Julian," Richard smiled sinisterly. "For control. I now own ninety percent of the Sterling wealth, clean and laundered. And you... you are a broken man standing in a illegal medical facility with a dead woman."

Richard pulled a silenced pistol from his coat pocket and pointed it straight at Julian’s heart.

"It's time to close the book on the Sterling legacy once and for all."
