Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of the Exiled

The autumn wind sweeping off the Hudson River carried the crisp scent of fallen leaves and changing seasons.

Erin Carter stood on the private terrace of her Tribeca penthouse, her emerald-green silk blouse fluttering slightly in the breeze. She looked down at the glittering sprawl of Manhattan beneath her, her reflection sharp and clear in the floor-to-ceiling glass doors.

Her phone buzzed on the wrought-iron patio table.

It was an email notification from her senior legal counsel, Evelyn Vance. Attached was a certified probate document regarding a trust fund that had belonged to Alexander’s estranged uncle, who had passed away earlier that month in Boston.

Erin opened the PDF, her dark eyes scanning the legal jargon.

Because Alexander’s assets had been frozen, liquidated, and seized during his corporate fraud indictment and subsequent divorce proceedings, he was legally barred from receiving any inheritance or secondary trusts. The contingent beneficiary clause, written twenty years prior, explicitly stated that in the event of default, bankruptcy, or criminal conviction of the primary heir, the entire portfolio transferred directly to the legal spouse.

The portfolio value? Three point two million dollars in unencumbered real estate and blue-chip stocks.

Erin let out a soft, low chuckle. Alexander had spent a decade scheming, embezzling, and ruining his life to protect his social standing and status, only to realize that every single financial safety net he thought he secured had ended up in the hands of the wife he treated like furniture.
