Chapter 21 - The Shadows of the Past

The inauguration gala for Erin Carter’s appointment to the State Judicial Advisory Board was supposed to be a night of pure triumph. Held at the historic Plaza Hotel, Manhattan’s most powerful figures—senators, supreme court justices, and Wall Street titans—gathered to honor the woman who had turned personal betrayal into a national movement for financial justice.

Erin stood near the crystal chandelier in a breathtaking crimson silk gown, her dark hair styled in an effortless, regal updo. Beside her, Marcus Vance looked distinguished in his black tuxedo, his eyes filled with quiet pride.

"You've built something truly indestructible, Erin," Marcus murmured, offering her a glass of sparkling water.

"It was never just about building a fortress, Marcus," Erin replied softly, looking out at the glittering crowd. "It was about making sure no one could ever use the walls against me again."

Before Marcus could respond, a sudden commotion at the entrance of the ballroom cut through the soft chamber music.

The grand oak doors burst open. Two security guards scrambled backward as a woman in a mud-splattered trench coat marched into the room. Her dark hair was tangled, her mascara smeared, and her eyes burned with an unhinged, dangerous desperation.

Sophia Reed.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom as guests stepped back, forming a ring of stunned silence around her.

"Where is she?!" Sophia screeched, her voice cracking as she scanned the crowd, her hand shoved deep inside her trench coat pocket. "Where is Erin Carter?!"
