Chapter 9 - The Final SettlementSix months later, Courtroom 302 of the Manhattan Supreme Court was quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of a court reporter’s stenograph machine.

The divorce proceedings of Grant v. Grant had become front-page fodder for New York’s society columns, chronicling the dramatic downfall of a high-flying investment banker whose anniversary night of infidelity cost him everything.

Alexander sat at the defense table looking ten years older. His hair was graying at the temples, his bespoke suit hung loosely on his frame, and his eyes were hollowed out by months of legal battles, unemployment, and profound humiliation.

Across the aisle sat Erin Carter.

She wore a stunning, impeccably tailored cream-colored pantsuit, her dark hair cascading in sleek waves over her shoulders. She radiated an aura of effortless power, serene confidence, and absolute victory. She wasn't the quiet, neglected wife sitting at home waiting for a text message anymore. She was a woman who had reclaimed her crown.

The judge reviewed the final settlement agreement, stamped it with a heavy judicial thud, and looked up.

“Decree granted,” the judge announced. “All marital assets, real estate holdings, and corporate equities revert solely to the petitioner, Erin Carter. Mr. Grant is remanded to fulfill all financial restitution terms as mandated by the court.”

Erin stood up, buttoned her blazer, and gathered her legal folders into her leather briefcase.

As she walked toward the aisle, she paused for a fraction of a second, her gaze sweeping across the courtroom.

Alexander looked up from the defense table, his eyes swimming with a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy. “Erin… please.”

Erin didn't break her stride. She didn't stop, she didn't yell, and she didn't shed a single tear. She simply looked at him with cool, absolute indifference—treating him like a speck of dust on a polished shoe.

She walked out of the courthouse doors into the bright New York sunshine, stepping into a waiting black town car that whisked her away toward a future without limits.
