Chapter 12 - The Bottom of the BarrelSix hundred miles away, inside the damp, concrete-walled holding area of a federal minimum-security facility in upstate New York, Alexander Grant sat hunched over a scarred wooden table.

His bespoke suits were long gone, replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. His hair was streaked heavily with gray, and the arrogant, self-satisfied smile that had once defined his expressions was entirely erased, replaced by a hollow, haunted stare.
A prison guard slapped a manila envelope down onto the table with a sharp crack.
“Legal mail for you, inmate 4892-B. Sign and move.”
Alexander didn't look up immediately. He slowly picked up a stubby plastic pen and scrawled his name on the delivery log. The guard walked away, leaving him alone under the harsh buzz of the overhead fluorescent lights.
With trembling fingers, Alexander tore open the envelope.
He pulled out the legal notice detailing the probate court’s transfer of his uncle’s trust fund—the three point two million dollars he had quietly counted on as a secret stash to rebuild his life after prison.
The document explicitly stated that due to his federal fraud conviction and the final terms of his divorce decree, the entire sum had been awarded to his ex-wife, Erin Carter.

“No…” Alexander choked out, his voice cracking into a ragged, pathetic whisper that bounced off the cold concrete walls. “No, please... that was mine...”
He buried his face in his hands, silent tears of utter despair burning his eyes. He had lost everything—his career, his reputation, his mistress, his freedom, and every last penny of his generational wealth.
