Chapter 7 - The Corporate BacklashBy Monday morning, Alexander Grant’s pristine corporate life was disintegrating faster than a sandcastle in a hurricane.
He walked into the glass-walled lobby of Vanguard Capital Partners at 8:30 AM, expecting a stressful week of damage control. Instead, he was intercepted at the elevators by two senior managing partners and the head of human resources.
“Alexander, my office. Now,” Richard Vance, the senior founding partner, commanded in a voice carved from ice.
Inside the executive boardroom, Alexander was handed a thick manila folder.
“What is this?” Alexander stammered, looking around the room at the grim, averted gazes of men he had played golf with for years.
“It’s an internal compliance audit,” HR director Karen Gable stated flatly. “Triggered by forensic financial disclosures filed this morning by Carter & Associates—your wife’s legal representatives.”
Alexander’s stomach dropped into his shoes. “My wife… what does my personal divorce filing have to do with the firm?”
“Everything,” Richard Vance snapped, slamming his hand onto the mahogany table. “Your wife’s legal team provided undeniable proof that over the past twenty-four months, you systematically funneled client entertainment funds and corporate expense accounts into private shell companies to finance personal gifts, luxury travel, and apartment leases for an outside romantic partner—Sophia Reed.”
Gasps echoed around the boardroom.
“That’s… that’s a complete fabrication!” Alexander shouted, his face turning pale. “Those were legitimate business expenses!”

“Really?” Karen Gable slid a printed wire-transfer record across the table. “So leasing a $12,000-a-month luxury penthouse in Tribeca under a fictitious corporate subsidiary for Ms. Reed is a standard business expense? The board of directors has voted unanimously to suspend your partnership indefinitely, pending a federal investigation into corporate fraud and embezzlement.”
Alexander stood frozen, the walls of his entire existence collapsing inward.
